The following letter was received December 30, 2008 by Catholic Insight from Scott Shortcliffe, director of the Periodical Publishing Policy and Programs section of the Department of Canadian Heritage:
"On July 24, 2007, I wrote to you to inform you that we had received a complaint regarding the eligibility of Catholic Insight for funding through the Publications Assistance Program. At that time, I informed you that we believed that the complaint might have some merit, and that we would be monitoring your magazine on an ongoing basis to ensure that the eligibility criteria of the program were being respected.
"Based on the information provided, we have now finished our review, and have concluded that Catholic Insight remains eligible for funding.
"Thank you for your co-operation in this matter and accept my best wishes for continued success with Catholic Insight."
Although Catholic Insight has cleared yet another hurdle in a campaign launched by homosexual activists, a Federal Court appeal of the dismissal of a human rights complaint against the magazine is still pending. Rob Wells of Edmonton filed the appeal in August, after the Canadian Human Rights Commission had ruled C.I.'s published material was "not likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt based on sexual orientation."
Catholic Insight has expended over $20,000 in addressing the unjustified legal actions launched against it and is appealing for donations to cover the legal costs of the Federal Court appeal.
