From Kevin McCarthy re Joan Chittister
Hello . . . About a week ago, Lifesite News reported that Sr. Joan Chittister, renowned American dissenter from Catholic teachings on the priesthood and on moral issues, will be featured on the National Catholic Lenten Mission this year on Vision TV. Posters advertising the program have been tacked on the bulletin boards of at least two of the churches in my area.
It is most distressing that a nun who rejects Catholic teachings has been given a forum on national TV to do catechesis in the name of the Church, which is how it will be perceived by the faithful. Even if her topics on this program are not problematic, she gains credibility in the minds of the average Catholic when she does speak in opposition to the Church.
Could not the CCCB lean on the National Catholic Broadcasting Corp. to cancel the program segments that feature Sr. Chittister? If that's not possible, couldn't the Bishops at least make a public statement to the effect that St. Chittister does not have the endorsement of the Canadian Bishops? I wonder if Catholic Insight would consider doing a story (not just a letter to the editor) on this in your next edition? If the Bishops will not do something to protect the flock, the faithful will naturally assume that the Lenten Mission (and Sr. Chittister) have their full endorsement. That's not right!
